How Often Should I Visit My Dentist?
Find out how turning to your dentist regularly could improve your oral health.
I think we can all agree that life gets pretty hectic; however, if you have found that life has taken over so much that you don’t remember the last time you visited the dentist, then we might have a problem. These routine checkups with our Sudbury, MA, family dentist, Dr. Reina Garcia, are important for everyone. Why? Let’s find out.
Cavities and gum disease are two of the most common dental issues to affect both children and adults. In fact, US adults between the ages of 20-64 had untreated cavities and about 96 percent had decay by the time they turned 65.
Approximately 20 percent of children between the ages of 5-11 and 13 percent of teens between the ages of 12-19 had at least one untreated cavity. And, as many as 50 percent of US adults have some form of gum disease.
While these statistics might freak you out, you’ll be happy to hear a little good news. Visiting your Sudbury general dentist every six months for checkups and cleanings can go a long way to preventing issues from happening and can even be instrumental in detecting problems early on when they are much easier to handle.
Most healthy individuals don’t need to come in more than twice a year (every six months) for preventive dental care. Since many of these problems don’t have symptoms, these routine checkups may be the only way to catch an issue. And, as you might imagine, the sooner you are able to pinpoint a cavity or gum disease the sooner you can treat it before more serious and lifelong complications occur.
There are certain factors that can increase your risk for decay and/or gum disease, which may mean that you could benefit from coming in every three or four months. While these more frequent cleanings and exams aren’t often required for the long-term, they may be ideal for certain high-risk individuals such as:
- Pregnant women
- Menopausal women
- Heavy alcohol drinkers
- Those with weakened immune systems
- Those with a personal history of cavities
