Find out how these two restorations could be all you need to get your smile back.restorative dentistry

Dental problems can happen to anyone, from cracking a tooth while crunching on ice to losing a tooth during an accident or sports injuries. While teeth are pretty durable and strong it doesn’t mean that they also can’t get knocked about and beaten up; however, how you choose to treat the problem is very important. Dental damage of any magnitude should not be ignored. Our Sudbury, MA, family dentist, Dr. Reina Garcia, can tell you how crowns and bridges could breathe new life back into your smile.

What is a dental crown?

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is fixed in place over a tooth to restore it after damage. Whether a tooth has been cracked, fractured, broken, or weakened by decay or an infection, there are many reasons our Sudbury cosmetic dentist will cement a custom dental crown over a tooth. The purpose of a crown is to take over the outer structure of the tooth, encasing the natural tooth inside to protect it from further damage or weakness.

Of course, in some cases, a dental crown may also be used to improve the shape, size, or color of a tooth that has severe cosmetic flaws. Dental crowns are also used to support bridges and to cover dental implants to replace a missing tooth.

What is a dental bridge?

Just as the name suggests, this fixed oral prosthetic is designed to replace one or two teeth in a row and to fill the gap with an artificial tooth or teeth (known as a pontic). In order to do this, two dental crowns will be placed over natural teeth that sit on either side of the gap. Then the pontic will be cemented in between the two crowns.

How long do they last?

Of course, the longevity of your restoration really depends on you. Even though crowns and bridges can’t last forever, how you care for your new restorations and your smile are telling to the lifespan of these oral prostheses. If you maintain good oral hygiene and keep your new restoration clean your crown and bridge could last up to 15 years (or even longer).
